An interview with Liz, by Mary ("Backstage" Sixteen Candles Video)

Just speaking from my own point of view, I have to say that if youâ�™ve gotta go, there are much worse ways do die than getting snacked on by one of the Dandies in the Sixteen Candles video. Even better is if you get to live to tell the tale, which happens to be exactly what happened to Liz.

â�œMy part in the video is when the Dandies come in and William drops the glove,â� Liz tells me. â�œThey had me stand next to the camera and said â�˜run into the group of vampires once the glove is droppedâ�™. I thought this was silly, because I wouldnâ�™t run INTO a group of vampires! But, seeing how adorable these vampires were, I complied.

â�œAt that moment I looked up and Brendon was grinning at me. Basically, I knew he was going to attack me, so I went running and he ran after me and pretended to bite me. I was extremely okay with this!â� Liz laughs.

â�œThey made us run and scream for hours. One girl fell over. The dance that Brendon does with the girls was made up a second before they filmed it. It was cute watching the girls, who were professional dancers, trying to teach him how to dance. He does a great impression of James Blunt. He kept singing â�˜Beautifulâ�™ all night, and a bit of â�˜Bicycleâ�™ by Queen.

â�œOriginally, Pete wanted Ryan (Ross, of Panic at the Disco) to play Brendonâ�™s part but since Ryan didnâ�™t want to do it, he offered Brendon the part. Brendon was quite pissed about this and I heard some naughty words from his mouth. I think he was mostly just jealous since Ryan is Peteâ�™s prodigy and all.

â�œBrendon just doesnâ�™t stop! He talked and jumped around and talked and talked and talked. He ate a whole bucketful of Red Vines that we found in Dr Philâ�™s studio, which was right next door - we were sneaking in to use the bathroom.â�

Did Liz spend any time with any of the other Dandies?

â�œI didnâ�™t want to run and scream anymore, so I ended up sitting on the front steps of a fake house on the street. Mike Carden came up to me and asked me if I wanted a cigarette. I said no and he proceeded to light up next to me. He was just making conversation, and at this time I didnâ�™t know The Academy Is very well. I asked Mike if he was an actor, or if he was â�˜in some bandâ�™ - to this day I am super embarrassed about that!â� laughs Liz. â�œBut he was nice, and giggled about it. I saw him a couple of weeks later and he apologized to me,saying that he was wasted the whole time on-set.â�

Much as I want to ask Liz twenty thousand questions about the Dandies, such an interview would probably only be interesting to me, so Iâ�™ll start from the beginning and ask this which are a little broader:Howâ�™d Liz end up in the video?

â�œIâ�™ve been an Overcast Kid since they started,â� Liz answers. â�œOne day I got an email saying I could sign up to be an extra in the video and they would choose thirty people to be put onto the list. I emailed them back, never thinking I would get chosen, but the next day I got an email saying that I was put onto the list, and giving me the times to be at the studio in LA.

â�œI was eighteen and I hadnâ�™t really been out of the state much on my own, so I begged my mom to come with me for the video shoot. I was so excited that I got sick on the plane, it was terrible. I had never been to California before - this was February, and there was snow in my home town but it was nice and warm in sunny California.

â�œThe whole thing just blew my mind. We shot at Paramount Studios from nightfall to sunup. Running and screaming for 12 hours was tiring but fun. I was there all night and doing tourist things during the day.

â�œI live in North Dakota, where thereâ�™s no cities for about 500 miles, just farms and junk. Iâ�™m 22 now and have always been into music, but Iâ�™m not one of those lucky few who are really great at playing anything - I played violin for 12 years but wasnâ�™t really that great at it. In 2003 I saw Fall Out Boy in concert; they were opening a band I loved calledMest . Fall Out Boy were so good in concert, and they were super nice after the show. I was still a teenager, and this was one of my first rock concerts, so they waited with me after the show until my dad picked me up. This started my love affair,â� says Liz with a laugh.

â�œAt the video shoot Pete walked by, and I went over and introduced myself. He went â�˜donâ�™t I know you?â�™ and claimed he recognized me. I told him that weâ�™d met a couple of times. Pete said he couldnâ�™t stop to talk because he had to go to makeup, so I asked if I could come along. He led me into the makeup holding my hand the whole time, what a weirdo.

â�œThe funniest thing I have ever seen was when Pete had to use a trampoline to jump onto the hood of the car when he attacks Beckett. It was a little dude just flying through the air. I was sitting next to Patrick at the time and he was doubled over in laughter.

â�œPatrick really does sing all the time. I was sitting on a curb - the set was basically a real street - and he set down next to me and was being all jazzy with his voice. I melted. He was talking to the wardrobe guy about how he really wanted to keep the jacket from his costume and how pissed he was that he didnâ�™t get to keep the one from â�˜Dance, Danceâ�™.

â�œBy about 3am Patrick got a little weird. He kept walking around doing a Bill Cosby impression. I was holding a From Under The Cork Tree sleeve and he grabbed it from me and went â�˜do you want me to sign this?â�™ and I said â�™sureâ�™, so he wrote â�˜Remember Cosbyâ�™. I often worry about that boyâ�¦

â�œDirty will do ANYTHING if Pete asks him. Pete was handcuffed - actually, it was these strange straps that went around his waist and held his arms down. He went â�˜Hey, Dirty, let me kick you in the ballsâ�™. After about ten seconds of arguing, Dirty let him.

â�œThere is a ton of stuff for the video that got cut out. In the long version, Joe becomes a vampire as well. He had the teeth in almost all night but his parts got cut. He was rather pissed about this, and I heard some swearing from him as well as from Brendon. They also took on a giant man - seriously, this dude was taller than Beckett, even - which included Joe hitting him over the head with a trash can.

â�œSince that first time I saw Fall Out Boy in concert Iâ�™ve seen them in Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit. Since those first couple of concerts I knew I wanted to do something with music - but not be the one in the spotlight,â� says Liz. â�œI have always been really into art as well, so I figured concert photography would be a great way to combine both interests.

â�œAll of my best band experiences have been with Fall Out Boy. So many times I would hang out after the show and they would come out and talk. Even now, Pete always takes time for the fans, and I really admire that. A couple of months ago they did a secret show in Peteâ�™s Chicago bar. Through Overcast Kids, I got guest-listed, so at the last minute I drove 800 miles to see them live. Later that night Pete and Ashlee were at the bar hanging out and we got to have a whole long conversation. Heâ�™s just such a real guy - Fall Out Boy are great guys and they really deserve the good things coming their way. I have met some of my best friends at Fall Out Boy concerts and have had the best times of my life,â� Liz says. â�œI can truly say that their music has changed my life, and I am very thankful for that.â�

German Panic At The Disco Interview

Panic At The Disco luden Anfang Juli gemeinsam mit ihren dÃ¤nischen Musikerkollegen von DÃºnÃ© das Frankfurter Publikum zu einem wahrlich schweiÃŸtreibenden Konzert. Bevor dies allerdings geschah, blieb uns die Chance nicht verwehrt, in die hoch sichere Batschkapp zu gelangen, um mit Schlagzeuger Spencer Smith und Gitarrist, sowie gelegentlichem Vokalisten Ryan Ross ein kurzes Interview zu fÃ¼hren.

Wie geht es euch und seid ihr bisher mit der Tour zufrieden?
Spencer: Es geht uns gut. Wir sind etwas mÃ¼de, weil wir bei vielen Festivals aufgetreten sind. Das macht zwar SpaÃŸ, aber nach einer Weile, wenn man zum Beispiel zwei hintereinander spielt, wird es etwas ermÃ¼dend. Aber, wisst ihr, wir touren jetzt seit zehn Tagen. Wenn man seine eigenen Konzerte gibt, so wie heute Abend, und Clubshows spielt, macht es SpaÃŸ fÃ¼r eine kleinere Gruppe von Leuten zu spielen. Es besteht irgendwie von Abend zu Abend ein groÃŸer Unterschied. Es lÃ¤uft gut.
Aber die Festivalgigs sind alle gut verlaufen?
Spencer: Ja, genau. Und es ist toll jeden Abend den Unterschied zwischen den Shows zu haben.

Zwischen dem ersten und eurem aktuellen Album hat eine groÃŸe Entwicklung stattgefunden. Was gab euch die Inspiration fÃ¼r so viel Neues?
Ryan: Ich denke, wir haben uns einfach mit anderen, neuen Dingen beschÃ¤ftigt. Wir haben die alten Songs einfach schon ein paar Jahre auf Tour und so gespielt, deshalb glaube ich, dass wir einfach etwas Anderes und Neues machen wollten, als wir anfingen, neue Songs zu schreiben. Es kommt davon, andere Musik zu hÃ¶ren und Jon in der Band zu haben, war ein groÃŸer Umbruch und hatte starken Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Songs. (Anmerk. d. Red.: Jon Walker ist als Bassist eingestiegen, nachdem 2006 Brent Wilson die Band verlieÃŸ) Ich denke, es war eine Kombination aus der langen Zeit zwischen den Alben, dass wir ein paar Jahre Ã¤lter sind und neue Musik entdeckt haben und dass Jon in der Band ist.

War es fÃ¼r euch von Anfang an klar, dass die Songs fÃ¼r dieses Album im Vergleich zu denen auf dem ersten so unterschiedlich werden sollten? Dass ihr zum Beispiel nicht mehr die elektronischen KlÃ¤nge benutzt.
Ryan: Ja, ich denke schon. Es wurde nie ausgemacht oder wirklich abgesprochen, es ist einfach passiert. Es hat uns irgendwie einfach nicht mehr interessiert. Also haben wir versucht neue Instrumente zu lernen und andere Melodien zu verwenden.

Ryan, du hast auf der neuen Platte auch gesungen. Wie war diese Erfahrung fÃ¼r dich?
Ryan: Es war cool! Das letzte Mal, das ich gesungen habe, war wahrscheinlich in unserer alten High School Band in einem kleinen home studio, deshalb hat es SpaÃŸ gemacht, das wieder zu machen. Ich singe gern und es war cool, etwas auf dem Album haben zu kÃ¶nnen, worauf ich singe.

Du warst dieses Mal auch nicht der Einzige, der die Lyrics verfasst hat. War es eine groÃŸe Umstellung fÃ¼r dich, diese Aufgabe mit Brendon zu teilen oder hast du es genossen?
Ryan: Eigentlich hat dabei jeder irgendwie geholfen und ich hab es genossen. Ich denke, vier Leute fÃ¤llt mehr ein als einer Person allein. Ich mag es immer noch Lyrics und anderes zu schreiben, aber jeder hat bei bestimmten Sachen ausgeholfen, was toll war. Das hilft uns mehr Songs zu schreiben und sie nach und nach entstehen zu lassen, denn wenn wir eine Idee fÃ¼r etwas haben und Spencer dann eine passende Zeile oder so etwas hat, dann habe ich vielleicht eine Idee fÃ¼r einen weiteren Teil. So lÃ¶st es irgendwie in jedem etwas aus.

Die Platte wurde in den legendÃ¤ren Abbey Road Studios abgemischt. Wie war das fÃ¼r euch?
Ryan: Das war wirklich toll, ja! Ich wÃ¼nschte, wir hÃ¤tten dort mehr Zeit verbringen kÃ¶nnen.
Wie lange wart ihr denn dort?
Ryan: Wir waren fÃ¼r ungefÃ¤hr zwei Wochen da.
Spencer: Es war echt eindrucksvoll fÃ¼r uns. Wir waren zuvor nur in wenigen Studios, da war es irgendwie seltsam in das wahrscheinlich berÃ¼hmteste Studio zu gehen, um tatsÃ¤chlich an unseren Songs zu arbeiten und das ganze Album dort abzumischen. Dann haben wir Peter Cobbin kennen gelernt, der es abgemischt und eine Weile in den Abbey Road Studios gearbeitet hat. Hoffentlich kÃ¶nnen wir fÃ¼r das nÃ¤chste Album wieder mit ihm arbeiten, vielleicht sogar wieder in den Abbey Road Studios. Es war eine wirklich gute Zeit, aber wie Ryan sagte, ich wÃ¼nschte wir hÃ¤tten mehr Zeit dort verbringen kÃ¶nnen.

Habt ihr das GefÃ¼hl, dass sich euer Publikum mit euch und dem neuen Album verÃ¤ndert hat?
Spencer: Das versuchen wir gerade herauszufinden, indem wir Ã¼berall hingehen.
Ryan: Wir sind uns nicht sicher. Das war irgendwie die Hoffnung hinter der Platte. Wir sind ein paar Jahre Ã¤lter, so wie jeder. Also haben wir gedacht, dass wer auch immer unsere Band mag, auch an dem selben Punkt in seinem Leben ist und haben uns einfach gedacht, dass wir dieses Album so machen sollten wie wir es wollten, es dann Leute hÃ¶ren und sich darÃ¼ber Gedanken machen lassen und einfach sehen, was sie jetzt Ã¼ber diese Platte und unsere Band denken. Wir wissen es aber noch nicht. Ich meine, wir hoffen, dass die Leute mit uns mitgehen und es verstehen aber wir haben einfach das gemacht, was wir schon immer gemacht haben. Wir wollten nicht irgendetwas wiederholen, weil das einfach nicht mehr wir sind.

Habt ihr die MÃ¶glichkeit, eure eigenen Ideen fÃ¼r eure Musikvideos umzusetzen?
Ryan: Ja, wir hatten fÃ¼r so ziemlich jedes Video, das wir gemacht haben, die Kontrolle. Wir sind gemeinsam mit dem Regisseur auf das gesamte Konzept fÃ¼r das Nine In The Afternoon Video gekommen, indem wir einfach alles Ã¼ber das Telefon besprochen haben. So war es auch mit dem fÃ¼r That Green Gentleman. Wir wollen in diese Sachen involviert sein, weil die Videos die Songs reprÃ¤sentieren und zu ihnen passen sollen, da wollen wir doch ein wenig Mitspracherecht haben.

The Academy Isâ�¦ und Cobra Starship, die wie ihr auch auf Fueled By Ramen sind, touren gerade im Rahmen der Warped Tour durch die Staaten. WÃ¤rt ihr gerade lieber mit ihnen gemeinsam unterwegs oder zieht ihr es vor, in Europa eure eigenen Shows zu spielen?
Spencer: Ich denke, gerade bei denen Bands, ist es etwas strange, denn ich glaube, gleich nachdem sie mit der Warped Tour fertig sind, werden sie mit uns nach Australien kommen. So werden wir sie glÃ¼cklicherweise sehen kÃ¶nnen. Ich denke, wir machen gerade so ziemlich das gleiche Ding. Warped Tour ist fÃ¼r die auftretenden Bands als eine der heftigsten Touren bekannt, einfach weil man auftreten muss, wenn es jeden Tag so heiÃŸ ist. Aber hier ist es auch ziemlich warm und wir haben auch ein paar Festivals gespielt. Wir haben allerdings ein paar neue Bands getroffen, das macht immer SpaÃŸ, wisst ihr, einfach so viele Menschen zu treffen wie mÃ¶glich. Und wie ich sagte, dann werden wir in Australien unsere alten TourgefÃ¤hrten von The Academy Isâ�¦ wieder sehen.

Ihr wart schon des Ã–fteren in Europa. Habt ihr besonders schÃ¶ne Erinnerungen an die Zeit hier?
Ryan: Viele Erinnerungen, ja! Wir waren jetzt doch ziemlich oft hier. Ich weiÃŸ nicht genau, das letzten Sommer, als wir in Europa waren, sind wir nachts auf den Eiffelturm. Das habe ich zuvor noch nie gemacht.
Spencer: Wir sind in Norwegen mit einem Boot gefahren, das war cool!
Ryan: Ja, das war letzte Woche. Wir waren drauÃŸen auf dem Meerâ�¦ Und Amsterdam war spaÃŸig (allgemeines GelÃ¤chter). Das war gestern, nein, vor zwei Tagen. Wir haben eine Menge SpaÃŸ hier. Das ist wahrscheinlich der beste Trip bis jetzt. Das Wetter ist auch toll. Normalerweise, wenn wir hier sind, ist das im FrÃ¼hling oder im Herbst, dann regnet es andauernd und das Wetter ist schlecht, aber dieses Mal ist es echt schÃ¶n.

Wenn ihr fÃ¼r das Line-Up eines Festivals jede beliebige Band auswÃ¤hlen kÃ¶nntet, wer dÃ¼rfte auf keinen Fall fehlen?
Ryan: Phantom Planet mÃ¼ssten spielen und The Raconteurs.
Spencer: Ja, wir wÃ¼rden gute Leute holen.
Ryan: Hast du gehÃ¶rt, dass Jay-Z Wonderwall gecovert hat? Das war sein erster Song beim Glastonbury.
Spencer: Oasis kÃ¶nnten spielen.
Ryan: Ja, das wÃ¤re super.

Was hÃ¶rt ihr zur Zeit privat?
Spencer: Ich habe mir das Lied â�žYouâ�™ll be in my Heartâ�œ von Tarzan runtergeladen, das Phil Collins geschrieben hat.
Ryan: Ja, ich hab mitgekriegt, dass du das gehÃ¶rt hast.
Spencer: Ich weiÃŸ nicht recht. In der letzten Zeit sowas wie Billie Joel und Tom Petty.
Ryan: Bob Dylan - Brining It All Back Home. Ich weiÃŸ nicht, ich habe in der letzten Zeit nicht so viel Musik gehÃ¶rt, das ist irgendwie komisch. Aber dafÃ¼r schreiben wir viele Songs.

Was habt ihr fÃ¼r die nahe Zukunft geplant?
Ryan: Weltraumodysseen.
Spencer: Wir versuchen eine Show auf dem Mond zu spielen, das haben wir schon seit einiger Zeit vor.
Ryan: Ja, das sagen wir schon eine Weile. Wir versuchen mit den Typen von der Nasa in Kontakt zu kommen, um zu sehen, ob wir da was machen kÃ¶nnen. Aber bevor wir das tun, werden wir fÃ¼r die nÃ¤chsten sechs Monate auf der Welt und sonst wo touren und dann ein neues Album aufnehmen.
